Weather conditions can change in a matter of hours. Here are four major weather conditions to watch for if ever lost in the backcountry or outdoors.
Thunder Storms- There is no safe place outside during a thunderstorm. If you can’t get indoors, stay away from open areas, power poles, and wire fences. Stay 100 feet or more away from the nearest person. It’s important to remember hypothermia can cause serious issues as well so locating cover like a cave or overhang may help save lives.
Floods- Heavy rain combined with melting snows can cause rivers and streams to rise much higher than their normal levels. Pay attention to the weather forecast, and never camp near streambeds during the time of the year rain is common. If floodwater are rising get to higher ground immediately until the rain subsides.
Tornadoes- Rapidly rotating columns of air can form within a thunderstorm. then can cause major destruction if they reach the ground. Get to a low spot, lie facedown and cover your head.
Hurricanes- Originating in the mid-Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico or the eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico. Hurricanes are among the most dangerous storms that affect the United States. Hurricane watches and warnings are almost always issued before a hurricane hits land. Watch the weather and heed the advice of officials.
