How to make a salve

Salves are used for a variety of skin problems, as well as a provide protection against elements.

  1. Gather 2 to 3 ounces of dried or fresh herbs and 1 pint of a carrier oil. Then use of the following methods. On the stove, combine with herbs and oil in the top of a double broiler. Heat over boiling waer for a least 40 minutes, then remove from the heat. Alterntively, put the herbs in a jar and cover with oil, making sure there are 2 to 3 inches of oil over the herbs. Run a knife around the edge of the jar of release any trapped air bubbles. Set the jar on a sunny windowstill for 2 to 6 weeks.
  2. Press the mixture through cheesecloth to separate the oil from the spent plant matter.
  3. To give the salve the proper consisgtanecy, use 1/4 cup grated beeswax for each cup of infused oil. Combine in the top of a double boiler. Heat until the beeswas is completely melted and the ingredietns are thoroughly combined.
  4. Teset the consistency by taking a spoonful of the mixture and putting it in the refrierator foor a mintue or two. If it becomes too hard, add more oil. If ti doesn’t hard, add more oil. If it doesn’t harden, add a bit more beeswax.
  5. Divided the mixture amoung serveal glass containers. Allow the mixture to coo, then seal the jars tightly . Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 years.
